People who suffer from allergies in Andalucia could face a particularly difficult spring this year due to a combination of unusual weather conditions.
An exceptionally rainy winter, following a dry autumn, has created the perfect conditions for plants to grow rapidly and release more pollen into the air.
According to Dr Ignacio Garcia Nuñez, head of the Allergy Department at Quironsalud Cordoba Hospital and Quironsalud Campo de Gibraltar Hospital, heavy rainfall stimulates plant growth and increases their reproductive activity.
This means the upcoming allergy season is likely to bring high pollen concentrations, especially from grasses.
Cypress pollen already causing symptoms
In Cordoba, the province is currently experiencing a peak in cupressaceae pollen, mainly from cypress trees, which is already triggering respiratory symptoms in many allergy sufferers.
In the coming weeks, pollen from plane trees is expected to become the main issue. Their flowering typically begins in mid-March, but this year it could arrive slightly earlier due to mild temperatures and high humidity.
Later in the season, olive pollen – one of the biggest allergy triggers in southern Spain – will take centre stage.
Dr García Nuñez warns that the recent rainfall may make olive trees more active and capable of producing larger quantities of pollen.
If further rain arrives during March or April, the pollen season could intensify even more.
Prevention key to controlling symptoms
Experts say preparation and prevention are essential for managing allergies.
One of the most effective protective measures is reducing exposure to pollen, including wearing a face mask on days with high pollen levels.
Treatment should be tailored to each patient and may include non-drowsy antihistamines, eye drops, nasal sprays or inhalers, depending on symptoms.
Allergy vaccines offer long-term solution
For long-term treatment, allergen immunotherapy, commonly known as the allergy vaccine, remains the only option that can modify the natural progression of the condition and significantly reduce symptoms.
Specialists recommend visiting an allergist for a personalised assessment and treatment plan.
‘Allergies can seriously affect quality of life and even trigger severe asthma attacks if they are not properly controlled,’ García Nuñez said.
‘Preparing in advance and following the correct treatment is the best way to face the spring with greater peace of mind.’
