Storm Regina will sweep into Andalucia from Tuesday, bringing rain, strong winds and rough seas.
The storm is expected to mainly affect the south between Tuesday and Thursday, with forecasters also warning that another front could arrive later in the week.
State weather agency Aemet has already issued multiple alerts for the region.
Yellow alert for Malaga and Granada coast
Aemet has issued a yellow warning for coastal phenomena on Tuesday, March 3, across the entire Malaga coastline – including both the Costa del Sol and Axarquía.
Waves could exceed three metres in height, with the alert active from midday until the end of the day.
A similar alert is in place along Granada’s Costa Tropical.
Rain alert in Cadiz
In Cadiz, the Campo de Gibraltar, Tarifa and Algeciras are under a yellow alert from 9pm Tuesday and throughout much of Wednesday for heavy rain.
Aemet is predicting up to 15mm of rainfall per square metre in an hour.
Wind alerts in Almeria
From 8pm on Tuesday, the whole coast of Almeria is under a yellow alert for strong winds of up to 70km/hr, which will continue into Wednesday.
Meanwhile, there is an orange warning covering its seas, due to three-metre waves and force 8 winds expected.
Mud rain on the way
Rain forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday will be accompanied by Saharan dust in suspension, meaning showers are likely to fall as muddy rain, leaving vehicles and streets coated.
Rain probabilities in Malaga province will rise sharply midweek:
- Monday: Around 20% province-wide (up to 40% in western areas like Gaucín and Manilva).
- Tuesday: Up to 50% in the far west, 10–15% elsewhere.
- Wednesday: 100% probability in western areas and up to 95% in Malaga city.
Rainfall amounts on Tuesday are expected to be light – generally under 1mm – although Gaucín could see up to 2.2mm in an hour.
From Wednesday onwards, rain will become more widespread across the province. Aemet says showers are likely to be moderate but could be locally heavy.
By Thursday, rainfall probabilities will begin to ease but could still hover around 50% in some areas.
A record storm season
With Regina’s arrival, this becomes the 17th named storm of the season, equalling the record set during the 2023–2024 campaign.
In that season, the 17th storm – Renata – was not named until April 14, highlighting just how active this winter has been.
