Spain’s government has firmly denied that US forces are using the American military bases in Rota (Cadiz) and Moron (Sevilla) to carry out operations against Iran.
Both Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares and Finance Minister Maria Jesus Montero have stressed that the bases have not been activated in relation to the current US offensive.
‘I want to be very clear and categorical: the bases are not being used and will not be used for anything outside the bilateral agreement or outside the framework of the United Nations Charter,’ Albares stated.
According to the government, there has been no operational activation of the two US-Spain joint facilities located on Andalucian soil.
Montero reiterated the message during a visit to storm-hit areas in Cantillana (Sevilla province), urging calm.
‘I want to send a message of reassurance regarding the alleged use of the bases. At no time has anything of this nature been activated,’ she said.
She added that while the conflict zone is geographically distant from southern Spain, the government is monitoring the escalation ‘minute by minute’ due to wider security implications and concerns for Spanish nationals currently in the region who may require evacuation.
Despite the government’s reassurances, the issue has sparked political friction in Congress.
Izquierda Unida (IU), a coalition partner within the broader left-wing bloc supporting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, has demanded clarification on whether the Naval Base of Rota played any logistical role in the US deployment.

IU’s Organisation Secretary, Eva Garcia Sempere, described the US military action as:
‘Another example of what the United States understands as foreign policy – spreading war and killing with impunity.’
The bases of Rota and Moron operate under long-standing bilateral defence agreements between Spain and the United States.
Any involvement in international military operations carries significant political sensitivity, particularly amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
