The wet and windy weather looks set to continue across Spain in February, according to state weather agency Aemet.
Meteorologists predict a carousel of Atlantic storms that will bring heavy rain, strong gusts and snow until at least February 15.
It comes after a succession of weather fronts in December and January, including Harry, Ingrid, Joseph and Kristin, all of which have brought significant rainfall across the country, and caused multiple deaths.
Aemet’s forecasts show February will begin with widespread rainfall across much of Spain, particularly affecting the western and southern parts of the Peninsula.
From February 2 to 8, Spain will be dominated by a new sequence of Atlantic low-pressure systems.
The first of these is expected to begin entering the Peninsula from the west on Sunday, meaning regions such as Galicia and Extremadura will be among the first to feel the effects, followed by Andalucia and other southern provinces.
As a result, rainy conditions are expected across most of the country for the next seven days.
The incoming storm systems are also forecast to bring heavy snowfall in mountainous areas, along with strong wind gusts and rough seas, mirroring the severe conditions seen during January’s storms.
Despite the unsettled weather, temperatures during the first week of February are not expected to be particularly cold. In fact, values are forecast to remain above the seasonal average in much of Spain.
Between February 9 and 15, uncertainty increases, but there are no clear signs of improvement.
Aemet indicates that further Atlantic storms are likely to continue arriving, bringing more rain to most of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, while conditions are expected to remain drier along the Mediterranean coast and in the Canary Islands.
The outlook for the third week of February, from 16 to 22, points in a similar direction.
Aemet predicts above-average rainfall across large parts of the Peninsula, once again excluding the Mediterranean area, alongside temperatures higher than normal for the time of year.
Forecasters stress that these medium-range predictions remain subject to change and advise residents to stay alert to updates as February progresses.
