A Spanish cardiologist has sought to dispell the myths related to aspirin and heart health.
Aurelio Rojas explained in a TikTok video that for years, the painkiller was recommended as a ‘just in case’ medication – but that the ‘science is now much clearer.’
Aurelio explained that the medication can be suitable for your heart, but only if you have already suffered a heart attack, angina or a stroke.
In this case of so-called ‘secondary prevention’, aspirin ‘clearly reduces the risk of further cardiovascular events,’ he said.
However, he explained that it is not recommended as routine treatment for people with no previous cardiovascular disease.
‘The benefit is small, and the risk of bleeding may outweigh it,’ he said.
