A six-year-old girl is the sole survivor of her immediate family after travelling on the Alvia train involved in the crash in Adamuz, which has so far claimed 40 lives and left more than 100 people injured.
According to Punta Umbria Town Hall, the girl’s parents, Cristina Alvarez and Felix Zamorano, her brother Pepe Zamorano, and her cousin Felix Zamorano are among the deceased.
Incredibly, the child was rescued almost unharmed after managing to escape from the train by her own means, before spending the night in the care of a Guardia Civil officer.
Early reports had suggested that her older brother had been found alive and admitted to hospital, but it was later confirmed that all four relatives had died.
The girl is reported to be in good condition and is now resting with her grandmother at a hotel in Cordoba.
Despite the severity of the crash, she only required three stitches for a head wound. She remained under official care until her family could be located.
Before the deaths were confirmed, the family had voiced anger and frustration at the lack of information provided in the hours following the accident.
According to family spokesperson Juan Barroso, relatives had visited ‘all the hospitals’ and ‘several information points’ without receiving clear answers about the whereabouts of their loved ones.
Following confirmation of the four deaths, Punta Umbría Town Hall declared three days of official mourning.
All municipal events scheduled for the coming days have been suspended as a mark of respect. The town’s mayor, Jose Carlos Hernandez, has travelled to Cordoba to support the family.
