A broken-down lorry in the middle lane of the A-7 caused major disruption between Fuengirola and Malaga this morning.
According to reports, the vehicle suffered a mechanical fault and came to a standstill at around 7.25am near Torremolinos. The incident quickly led to tailbacks of up to 13km.
By 10.30am, congestion had stretched as far as Fuengirola, while traffic authorities were still waiting for the lorry to be recovered.
In the opposite direction, traffic was also affected, with queues of up to half a kilometre reported due to the so-called ‘rubbernecking effect’, as drivers slowed down to look at the incident.
The Agencia de Emergencias de Andalucia (EMA) confirmed that officers from the Guardia Civil de Tráfico and road maintenance teams were deployed to the scene.
The vehicle involved was reportedly a lorry with a trailer that broke down close to the junction between the A-7 and the MA-20.
The incident coincided with the morning rush hour, at a time when parents were driving children to school and commuters were heading to work.
