An entire apartment block had to be evacuated in Monda on Sunday night after filling with floodwater during the passing of Storm Francis.
The town in inland Malaga was one of the worst affected by the severe weather, which had sparked a feared red alert from state weather agency Aemet.
Most of the issues in the municipality were concentrated on Calle Marbella, where an entire building had to be vacated.
According to Monda Town Hall, the severity of the situation prompted immediate action from the mayor and council members, who traveled to the area along with local police and Civil Protection units.
Firefighters were called to the building known as ‘La Roca’, and decided to remove all 12 families from the site.
The City Council arranged for their relocation to the Hotel El Castillo, where they spent the night.
The building’s structural integrity is now being assessed to determine if the rains have caused damage that compromises its safety.
Elsewhere in Monda, a series of videos shared on X showed how streets had been turned into rapids of gushing floodwater.
The town experienced more than 290mm of rainfall per square metre.
Meanwhile in Cartama, the Rio Guadalhorce once again burst its banks, causing widespread flooding, particularly around Estacion de Cartama.
A number of homes were evacuated in Cartama as a precaution.
It came after the Red Cross was filmed setting up an evacuation centre in the local table tennis club, featuring beds.
