The SOS CANYA dog shelter in Los Barrios has issued an urgent appeal as its facilities face a serious risk of flooding, with some areas already under water.
Weather forecasts indicate that heavy rain is set to continue until around 5am, coinciding with high tide, significantly increasing the danger.
The shelter is urgently seeking temporary foster homes and the assistance of people with 4×4 vehicles who can help evacuate and transport dogs today.
Anyone able to help is asked to coordinate collections in advance via their Facebook page here.
The organisation has stressed that all movements must be planned beforehand to ensure the safety of both the animals and volunteers.
Those willing to assist are urged to make contact as soon as possible and provide a WhatsApp number so efforts can be properly coordinated.
The shelter said public cooperation is crucial over the coming hours to protect the animals as weather conditions continue to deteriorate.
It wrote in a Facebook post: ‘At the moment, we no longer have small or ‘easy’ dogs left at the pound. The dogs currently remaining are mostly medium and large dogs.

‘For many of these dogs, we do not have information about how they are with cats or children, and some are not suitable to live with other dogs.
‘This means they can only be placed in very specific foster or adopter situations. We are extremely grateful for all the offers to foster.
‘However, we’re very sorry, but at the moment we cannot reply to everyone if we do not have a suitable dog for your situation.’
It added: ‘Please do not call us. If you can help, send us a message with your name and WhatsApp number.
‘Please do not go to the pound without an appointment. All visits and collections must be arranged in advance.’
