The Costa del Sol was battered by fierce winds overnight as Storm Emilia continued to be felt across southern Spain.

Footaged shared online showed a series of Christmas lights being brought down by gales in La Cala de Mijas.

In Calle Miguel Bueno, Fuengirola, a tree was filmed seemingly snapping in half amid the extreme weather.

A yellow weather alert had been issued on Monday night, warning of strong gusts of wind and heavy rainfall across Malaga’s coast and Guadalhorce Valley.

The warnings were deactivated on Tuesday morning, and there are currently no weather alerts in place for the whole of Andalucia.

Yellow alerts for heavy rain and storms were scheduled to end at 10am in the neighbouring region of Murcia.

It comes after the passing of Storm Emilia brought biblical scenes to parts of southern Spain on Sunday night, with widespread reports of flooding and severe thunder.

Among the hardest hit areas were Almeria in Andalucia, the neighbouring region of Murcia and Orihuela, on the southern Costa Blanca in Alicante.

Footage from Aguilas (Murcia) showed how a dual carriageway was turned into a river after being completely submerged by gushing floodwater.

In the early hours of Tuesday, a clip shared on X showed how a palm tree had been set ablaze by a lighting bolt in Callosa de Segura in Alicante.
