The woman who caused a serious collision by driving on the wrong side of the AP-7 near Mijas was five times over the drink-driving limit, it has emerged.

Police sources quoted by local media said she recorded more than 1.30mg of alcohol per litre of breath, when the limit in Spain is 0.25mg/l.

The woman, who police confirmed is a Colombian national, was filmed driving into oncoming traffic near the exits for Mijas on the toll road on Saturday.

In a viral clip, she is seen almost colliding with a lorry before a white car smashes head on into her vehicle.

The incident took place at around 5.40pm, when multiple callers alerted Andalucía’s 112 emergency line to a car travelling in the wrong direction on the AP-7.

Minutes later, further calls reported that the car had crashed head-on with another vehicle near kilometre 207. Another road user captured the collision on video from the opposite carriageway.

Health authorities later confirmed that five people were taken to Hospital Costa del Sol, several in a serious condition.

The injured include four women – two aged 42 and two aged 43 – and a 36-year-old man.

Police breathalysed the driver shortly after the crash. Given the alcohol reading, she is now under investigation for road-safety offences and causing injury through negligence.

Initial indications suggest she may have taken a motorway exit believing it was an entry slip road.
