Spain has witnessed yet another bout of bizarre summer weather after streets were turned into rivers following severe hail storms.

Flash flooding was seen across the south-eastern region of Murcia on Thursday after golf ball-sized hail stones plummeted to the ground throughout the day.

The huge amount of fallen ice quickly melted due to the high temperatures, forming rapids that in some areas began filling homes and businesses.

According to local reports, the worst hit towns included Calasparra and Casas Navarro, both in Murcia.

Meanwhile, Benidorm was rocked by a fierce lightning storm overnight and into the early hours of Friday.

Footage shared online by British tourists showed how some bars were left empty as holidaymakers decided to stay indoors amid the deluge.

The whole of the Alicante region was placed on alert by state weather agency Aemet overnight.

Most of the province is under a yellow warning for intense rain until at least 8am, with up to 20mm expected to fall within an hour.

Meanwhile, inland areas of Murcia, which have been the worst hit, are under a more serious orange alert over the same period.
