A forest fire broke out in Mijas in the early hours of Sunday morning in what has been a testing weekend for firefighters across Andalucia.

The flames took hold in Mijas Golf, an area with a large population of British expats and tourists, at around 12.40am.

Aircraft had to be roped in help tackle the inferno, while reinforcements were sent from neighbouring from Marbella and Benalmadena.

It is the fifth fire in Malaga province this weekend alone, following Alora, Villanueva de la Concepcion, Casares and Moclinejo, all of which have been extinguished.

Nine groups of forest firefighters and five fire engines were deployed to Mijas Golf after several witnesses called the 112 emergency hotline.

The flames were seen near residential areas on Avenida de Francia, opposite the La Condesa residential development.

The wind spread the smell of burning, which was reportedly noticeable from several points in Mijas.

The authorities declared the fire stabilised by 1.30am, but crews continued working through the night to fully control the flames. It was finally under control at 7.25am.

A smaller crew is still on site to manage the full extinction of the fire.
