A series of intense hail storms have left locals stunned in southern Spain today.

The worst of the freak weather has been recorded in Murcia, which was placed on a yellow alert for the hail on Saturday.

Footage shared on X from the town of Jumilla showed enormous hail stones crashing against cars and the ground.

A local man recording the video can be heard shouting in astonishment at the huge sound being created, saying: ‘This is scary, man!’

One photo showed a resident holding three giant hail stones in their hand, showing how they were similar in size to golf balls.

The hail comes amid a sudden cold drop that has affected the entire mainland this weekend.

Parts of Alicante, Valencia, Albacete, Castellon and elsewhere were also forecast to see heavy rain and hail on Saturday.

The weather alerts are in place until midnight tonight.

Most of the extreme weather is expected to subdue by Sunday, and temperatures are set to creep back up by the end of next week.
