Four people have been injured after a boat caught fire off the coast of Lanzarote.

The inferno took place near Yaiza on Thursday night, with photos shared online showing a thick column of smoke billowing into the sky.

The recreational vessel had set off for a cruise from Puerto Calero, carrying three men and one woman.

They were all rescued by the coastguard before being treated for hypothermia.

The fire (pictured) was extinguished by the Maritime Rescue service

All four were expected to fully recover from the ordeal.

The Maritime Rescue service was also responsible for extinguishing the fire.

The main hypothesis is that the flames started after a short circuit in the engine room of the 12-meter pleasure boat, owned by a rental company.
