Freak rainstorms along the Costa Blanca have sparked an orange weather alert from state weather agency Aemet.

The public weather service is warning of up to 40mm of accumulated rainfall within an hour until at least 6pm.

The serious alert, only one step down from the most critical red warning, is in effect across the whole Costa Blanca.

The affected areas include Benidorm, Alicante, Denia, Elche, Torrevieja and Orihuela.

Holidaying Brits surprised by the wet weather so far into May took to social media to share photos and videos.

One clip showed the usually packed beaches of Benidorm completely abandoned as rain lashed down.

Another Brit wrote on X: ‘It’s our last day and it’s battering with rain!

‘I’m away to the pub and drink like I’ve got the thirst from being stuck in a desert for a month.’
