A mystery British man has died alone in a Spanish hospital after no one came forward to claim him as family, the Spanish Eye can reveal.

Stephen, 71, is believed to be buried in an unmarked grave in Torrevieja after spending months languishing in the local hospital.

The cyclist was first admitted on September 24 after suffering a stroke while on his bike in Alicante, on the Costa Blanca.

He was struck with severe memory loss and could only recall his first name and age, but no other details about his life or loved ones, not even his address.

The officer leading the case told the Spanish Eye today: ‘Unfortunately, Stephen died a few months ago.

‘We did everything we could to identify him but nobody came forward.’

It comes after a series of appeals were launched last year in a bid to track down loved ones.

The officer added: ‘In these types of cases, the body is kept for a while and if no one claims it, it is buried locally by the town hall. I believe the local cemetery has a special place for these cases.’

The Spanish Eye has contacted Torrevieja Town Hall for comment.

A spokesperson from the local council’s health department said the hospital would only give details to family members – despite no relatives having come forward and his surname remaining a mystery.

The Spanish Eye has requested more information on the burial of Stephen from the British Embassy.

In the previous update in November, it was revealed the Brit had suffered a second stroke.

Spanish police were barely able to interview him due to his serious condition, claiming he could ‘barely talk.’

The case officer explained at the time: ‘We have absolutely nothing to go on, because he had no wallet on him when he was admitted and only knows his first name and age.

‘There are also no missing persons reports that match his name or description.’

Stephen asked for his photo and story to be shared online in the hope that someone would help identify him and tell him where he lives.

The Foreign Office previously said it ‘stands ready to support British nationals abroad 24/7’.
