The young woman who was killed by a falling palm tree in Torremolinos was on her way to collect her TIE card, it has emerged.
Maroua, 31, was en route to the Policia Nacional station in the Costa del Sol town when tragedy struck on Tuesday.
According to reports, the Moroccan woman, who lived in the Carretera de Cadiz area of Malaga, had travelled to the town to complete the final step to become a legalised migrant in the country.
The accident occurred on Avenida Palma de Mallorca, near the courthouse, meaning she was just six minutes away from reaching her destination.
At around 1.40 pm, a palm tree was uprooted by strong winds from Storm Joseph, which reached speeds of up to 80km/hr that day.
A Guardia Civil officer working at the courthouse was the first to come to her aid.
Maroua had suffered serious leg injuries, although the cause of death was severe chest trauma from being struck by the palm tree.
Paramedics tried their best to revive her but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad Extranjero), is a vital ID card given to foreign residents in Spain.
It proves you are legally residing in the country and allows you to access services like opening bank accounts, signing contracts, enrolling in schools and getting healthcare.
