Firefighters have demanded a stretch of commuter railway on the Costa del Sol be urgently checked due to a large crack in a retaining wall.
Fears grew among the local community earlier this week after a viral video appeared to show significant damage in the area of Arroyo de la Miel in Benalmadena.
The safety of Spain’s railway network is a concern for millions nationwide following the deadly Adamuz disaster this month that cost 45 lives.
The sizeable crack is seen running alongside an overpass on the C1 line as it passes through Benalmadena.
Emergency crews went to the scene after the video posted on social media spread rapidly among locals.
The Benalmádena fire chief formally notified infrastructure operator Adif of the condition of the wall and urged the public body to ‘act quickly’, according to council sources cited by Diario Sur.
The crack is estimated to stretch for around 30 metres along the wall next to the coastal commuter line.
The town hall has made it clear that firefighters are unable to intervene directly. Nor can they determine how dangerous the crack may be, as they are not authorised to access the site, which falls under state control.
‘We’ve asked Adif to inspect it, but we can’t say whether it poses a risk or not,’ officials explained.
Adif has since said its infrastructure maintenance teams have been monitoring the wall for some time and are keeping a close eye on the crack’s development.
According to Diario SUr, they were at the site on Wednesday, but told the paper the C1 line remains ‘fully operational.’
