State weather agency Aemet had placed the whole of Andalucia under a yellow weather alert for the majority of Tuesday, warning of heavy rainfall and strong winds.

The Costa del Sol and Guadalhorce Valley is on a yellow warning for heavy rain and winds of up to 80km/hr, which is now in place until at least 9pm on Wednesday.

In Mijas, a major pipe burst overnight, sending water spilling out onto the street in Mijas Pueblo.

Water management company Acosol spent hours fixing the issue, which left hundreds of people without tap water. It said normal service was resumed at around 4pm.

In Fuengirola, three people reportedly escaped with their lives after their black Mercedes was washed away by floodwater.

Photos shared online showed the vehicle being dragged by the stream at the height of Venta de La Morena.

Trees were also pictured snapped in half in Las Lagunas, with at least one damaging a parked white car.

In Marbella, the A-7103, which connects with Ojen, was closed for several hours due to a rockfall sparked by the severe weather.

Elsewhere in the town, palm trees were toppled over outside apartment buildings, sparking the mobilisation of firefighters.
