Fierce thunderstorms are brewing over southern Spain this morning as Storm Olivier continues its trajectory over the country.

Footage shared on X shows bolts of lightning tearing up the skies over Sevilla, Cadiz and Huelva.

One local said: ‘If you look closely at the clouds, their grey colour – the normal characteristics of storm clouds – is complemented by the light brown tone of haze (calima).’

Another video showed hail stones falling in the Pino Montano neighbourhood of Sevilla.

Calima happens when Saharan dust particles are blown into the sky by strong winds in Africa, before making their way to Spain.

This gives the sky an orange, yellow or red hue and the atmosphere becomes noticeably more humid.

The sand particles are then carried down by rain droplets – if it rains at all – that stain buildings, cars and other objects.

According to meteorologists at El Tiempo, the ‘calima’ will affect the majority of the Spanish mainland and the Balearic Islands from today.
