A Spanish cardiologist has sought to dispell the myths related to aspirin and heart health.

Aurelio Rojas explained in a TikTok video that for years, the painkiller was recommended as a ‘just in case’ medication – but that the ‘science is now much clearer.’

Aurelio explained that the medication can be suitable for your heart, but only if you have already suffered a heart attack, angina or a stroke.

In this case of so-called ‘secondary prevention’, aspirin ‘clearly reduces the risk of further cardiovascular events,’ he said.

However, he explained that it is not recommended as routine treatment for people with no previous cardiovascular disease.

‘The benefit is small, and the risk of bleeding may outweigh it,’ he said.

Aurelio explained that regular use of aspirin is only recommended in very selected cases.

These would be in people with ‘very high cardiovascular risk and low bleeding risk’, and ‘always after medical assessment’, he said.

This may include those with:

  • Long-standing diabetes
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Multiple risk factors such as high blood pressure, obesity, high LDL cholesterol, low HDL
  • High triglycerides
  • Elevated ApoB
  • High Lipoprotein(a)

Aurelio said you should never decide on your own to start taking aspirin regularly and that you should always speak to your doctor.
