Marbella is set to build almost 900 new homes after taking the next step towards the long-awaited La Vizcaina project.

The City Council this week announced that it has officially earmarked the 623,000m2 plot in the eastern half of the Costa del Sol municipality.

Urban Planning Councillor Jose Eduardo Diaz said the large-scale project will feature a hotel, up to 872 homes and an educational complex,

Speaking alongside municipal spokesperson Felix Romero on Tuesday, Diaz said the plan ‘includes an economic report that guarantees the viability and balance of the project.’

He said the plot sits south of the AP-7 motorway, bordered to the west by La Reserva de Marbella and to the south by Artola Alta and the Cabopino golf course.

Under Marbella’s 1986 General Plan, the land was classified as ‘developable but unzoned’. Redeveloping it now, he said, will ‘integrate it into the existing urban fabric’ while improving road connections and the wider local infrastructure.

He added that the plans are ‘environmentally sustainable’ and will preserve the land’s natural character.

A significant portion of the plot will be set aside for a supra-municipal educational facility, capable of serving a wider catchment beyond Marbella itself.

Land will also be reserved for hotel development, reflecting strong investor interest in high-quality tourism projects.

As for housing, the development is expected to contain between 685 and 872 homes, with 40% designated as publicly subsidised or affordable rental units. Plans also include generous green spaces and open areas.

Diaz said the next key step will be the presentation of a zoning plan detailing square-metre allocations and final planning criteria for each designated use.
