A nurse at Marbella’s Costa del Sol Hospital has been signed off work after being kicked in the head by a patient, according to the Satse union.
In a statement on Friday, Satse said the assault occurred in the observation area of the hospital, where the patient allegedly became ‘agitated’.
The patient is said to have begun shouting insults and spitting at the nurses who were attending to him.
The situation escalated quickly, with the patient lashing out and landing a kick to the head of one of the nurses.
She was taken for urgent medical checks and has since been placed on medical leave due to her injuries.
Satse said the incident is the latest example of the ‘lack of security’ faced by nursing staff during routine duties.
The union is calling for a greater on-site security presence and structural changes within the hospital to protect health workers.
The union reiterated its ‘total condemnation’ of violence against healthcare professionals, urging the regional health authority to implement ‘real and effective’ measures to prevent further assaults.
An investigation has been launched into the assault.
