A man shot in the knee in Marbella this week is a convicted criminal who was warned of the attack, it has emerged.

According to sources close to the case, the unnamed victim told police from his hospital bed that he could not tell them more or ‘he would be killed’.

He had been pulled over while travelling at high speed in a Mercedes driven by his brother shortly before 1am on Thursday.

The Policia Nacional intervened after seeing the car overtaking other vehicles and forcing drivers to swerve out of the way.

Once the car was stopped, officers saw the passenger was bleeding from a gunshot wound to the knee, and he was rushed to hospital.

He would later confess that he already knew something was going to happen to him, telling officers there had been a previous warning.

However, his version of events and that of his brother were contradictory.

According to sources quoted by Malaga Hoy, the driver claimed that they had arranged to meet a man to sell him a car, but that when they arrived at the location, three people appeared and opened fire without saying a word.

The other man, from his hospital bed and under police custody, confessed that he already suspected that he might be shot, which supports the hypothesis that the case may be related to a debt or robbery.

He had been warned, according to his testimony, a few days earlier that something was going to happen, although he refused to give more details, claiming that if he talked about what happened, they would kill him.

Sources confirmed that the injured man has a criminal record for drug-related offences.
