The nationwide heatwave may be fading, but Malaga is set for one final scorcher that will be fuelled by the dreaded terral.

On Tuesday, Aemet has issued an orange alert for high temperatures across the Costa del Sol, including Malaga city and the Guadalhorce valley.

Between 1pm and 9pm, the mercury is expected to climb to 39C, while the Axarquía will be under a yellow alert with highs of up to 37C.

The terral, Malaga’s infamous hot, dry wind that can make summer heat feel suffocating, is forecast to hit both Tuesday and Wednesday with gusts ranging from moderate to strong.

Jose Luis Escudero, meteorologist and author of SUR’s Tormentas y Rayos blog, confirmed residents can expect the worst of it Tuesday afternoon and into Wednesday.

According to Aemet’s Andalucia spokesman, Juan de Dios del Pino, the return of westerly winds will soon bring ‘a notable drop in temperatures.’

By the end of the week, forecasters say, Malaga should finally rejoin the rest of Andalucia in leaving the heatwave behind.
