The corpse was found near the mouth of the Almanzora river, in the municipality of Cuevas, after he was believed to have been swept away by a current.

The search had begun at aronud 6am on Friday when local police saw a car with its lights on stuck in a riverbed on the AL-8106.

The 112 emergency service said four people were traveling in the vehicle. Three of them managed to get out on their own, but one of them, a man from Pulpi, was not located.

A large scale search operation was activated, involving the Guardia Civil, before the body was found some hours later.

The area has been one of the hardest hit by Friday’s rainfall, with more than a dozen incidents reported due to accumulated water on roads and streets.

The Almeria government said: ‘Our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the 33-year-old Pulpileño who passed away today in Cuevas del Almanzora.

‘The president of the Provincial Council has made himself available to the mayor of Cuevas del Almanzora and has expressed his sorrow to the Pulpileño mayor.’
