An orange alert for heavy rain and hail has been issued for Barcelona.

The warning was issued by state weather agency Aemet and is in place between 8pm Friday and 4am Saturday.

The warning stretches along the province’s coast, encompassing the tourism meccas of Barcelona city and Sitges.

Meteorologists expect up to 40mm of rainfall per hour and warn there will be low visibility.

The rainfall in the affected areas could be ‘locally strong’ and accompanied by hail, Aemet said.

It follows dramatic storms in Alicante and Murcia on Thursday night, which caused local flash floods.

In Benidorm, many tourists stayed home amid a deluge and storms that lit up the night’s sky.
