An innocent bystander has been injured after catching a stray bullet during a shootout on the Costa del Sol.

The terrifying incident took place in the parking lot of an Aldi supermarket in Atalaya Isdabe, Estepona, on Sunday afternoon.

Police sources quoted in Spanish press said shots were fired following an argument between the occupants of two separate vehicles.

Supermarket shoppers ran inside for cover as the sounds of the shots being exchanged between the two armed groups sparked panic.

One of the bullets hit a bystander who had nothing to do with the incident, it is reported.

They are believed to have been treated and their injuries were not life threatening, according to Diario Sur.

The Aldi is situated on Avenida Matas Verdes, in an area with a very high population of British expats and tourists.

The Policia Nacional was seen working the scene after taping it off and clearing the area.

The force, which is now leading the investigation, is said to have collected several bullet casings.

There have been no reported arrests so far.
