The vital A-397 that connects the historic city of Ronda to the Costa del Sol will reopen next, week it has been announced.

The crucial road has been closed since March, when a landslide destroyed a large section of the highway during a fierce DANA storm.

After four months of intense repairs, costing millions of euros, Ronda mayor Maria de la Paz Fernandez said the road will ‘partially reopen’ on Monday, July 14.

‘It’s a partial opening, but a very important one,’ she told Canal Sur Radio.

‘These have been very difficult months for many people from Ronda and the mountains who travel to the Costa del Sol every day to work.’

She added that there is still a little wait for the works ‘to be definitively completed, because it is a partial opening, but a very important one for the thousands of commuters who commute every day.’

The mayor was unable to give more details about how the reopened lane will operate from Monday.

However, she branded it ‘extremely good news’, insisting ‘this will return to the normality, more or less, that we’ve always had.’

She said the road’s closure had impacted businesses and tourists, with both forced to take much longer routes to travel between Ronda and the coast.

She added: ‘We are very happy. The work is very complicated, because it has been very complex, but I believe everything has been approached from an absolutely impeccable technical point of view, and it will bring great peace of mind to many families and to the cities.’
