Two elderly men died in a plane crash in southern Spain on Sunday, it has emerged.

The victims, aged 73 and 70, are believed to have collided with a power line near the Guadalcacin reservoir in San Jose de Valle, Cadiz.

The light aircraft crashed in a hard-to-access area at around 11.15am, but news only broke of the accident late in the evening.

The crash site was located by an off-duty Guardia Civil officer from nearby Algar who knew the terrain and responded after receiving a call from a local resident about a possible accident.

Emergency services confirmed that the aircraft had departed earlier that morning from La Ina, near Jerez de la Frontera, on what was described as a routine flight.

Both occupants were found dead inside the wreckage.

The victims, aged 73 and 70, are believed to have collided with a power line near the Guadalcacin reservoir in San Jose de Valle (pinpointed), in Cadiz.

The incident cut power to a number of nearby rural properties.

The alarm was first raised by a resident of Algar, who phoned emergency services after witnessing what appeared to be a crash near the Puente Tempul area.

It was the off-duty officer from the Algar post, contacted separately by the same resident, who reached the site independently and confirmed the crash and fatalities.

Subsequent checks with the Jerez Airport tower and one of the aircraft’s owners confirmed that the plane was registered in La Ina and had departed that morning with two people on board.

The investigation into the crash continues.
