The majority of Spain has been placed under an alert for extreme heat over the weekend.

It comes as a heatwave is set to grip the country, sending temperatures to as high as 44C.

The warnings, ranging from yellow to orange, cover the entire centre of the country, the majority of Andalucia, Mallorca and the north east.

The hottest days will be Saturday and Sunday, with areas in the south, including Sevilla, Cordoba and Jaen, to reach maximum temperatures of 44C.

It comes as Europe is currently being gripped by a ‘heat dome’ – a high-pressure system acting like a lid, trapping intense mid‑level air over the continent.

This weekend, it’s bringing brutal heat across southern and much of central Europe.

France, Italy and Germany will see highs between 33–38C, with some regions issuing health alerts and cancelling events due to the heat.

Meanwhile, Northern Europe and the UK will see their first heatwave of 2025, with highs around 34C in eastern England and especially hot in France (up to 38C).
