A large section of the ceiling has collapsed at Mallorca airport.

A sudden cascade of rubble sent shockwaves through Palma Airport on Tuesday afternoon, rattling nerves and sending clouds of dust billowing through one of the busiest passenger zones.

The drama unfolded just before 4.30pm, when chunks of wood, cement, and shattered glass plummeted from a construction site perched above the airport’s exit corridor.

The location was mere steps from baggage claim belts 0 to 17. Witnesses described a deafening bang, followed by a moment of panic as a cloud of thick dust engulfed the hall.

The debris slammed into the glass roofing overhead with brute force, cracking panes and smashing into a row of vending machines, some of which now stand crumpled and cracked.

Incredibly, no injuries were reported despite the airport being very busy at the time of the incident.

Airport staff quickly cordoned off the affected zone while cleaning crews began hauling away chunks of concrete and broken materials.

The section of the airport is currently undergoing renovations as part of AENA’s sweeping expansion plan for Son Sant Joan.

Tuesday’s incident took place in a transitional corridor leading out of arrivals – an area lined with vending machines and used by thousands of travellers daily.

According to early reports, work was actively underway above the site when the material gave way.

AENA has since confirmed it is launching an internal investigation.

Although the airport has since resumed normal operations, the scare has reignited concern over safety protocols at critical infrastructure sites, especially as major renovation projects press on in high-footfall areas.
