An episode of extreme heat is expected to grip a major holiday island in Spain this week.

According to state weather agency Aemet, temperatures will reach a ‘dangerous’ 36C on Mallorca on Friday.

The public weather service has placed the majority of the island under a yellow alert for extreme temperatures on that day.

The alert begins at 1pm and ends at 6.59pm, with tourists and residents in the affected areas advised to take extra precautions.

The towns and cities under advisory include major holiday resorts such as Palma de Mallorca and Andratx.

Also affected are the entire southern coast and inland areas like Llucmajor and Inca.
