A nine-year-old boy has died in hospital after being struck by a car in Sevilla.
The incident happened on Friday evening on Calle Lucas Cortes, Triana at around 8.45pm, when the child attempted to cross the road and was hit by a passing vehicle.
Triana is one of the most popular tourist areas in Sevilla, home to its bridge of the same name and the iconic Calle Betis.
According to witnesses, the boy was struck by the right side of the car and thrown backwards, hitting his head on the kerb.
Bystanders rushed to help before paramedics from the 061 emergency service arrived and began intensive resuscitation efforts at the scene.
A temporary treatment area was set up outside a nearby bakery, where medics worked for nearly an hour to stabilise him.
He was then transferred in a critical condition to Hospital Virgen del Rocio, where he died on Sunday.
The scene quickly became tense in the aftermath of the collision, with relatives and locals gathering in large numbers. Police were deployed to maintain order.
The driver was taken to a nearby street where he underwent alcohol and drug tests, although the results have not yet been made public.
Sevilla mayor Jose Luis Sanz said early findings suggest the incident may have been a ‘tragic accident’.
He explained that initial investigations indicate the child may have collided with the side of the moving vehicle before falling and striking the kerb.
‘It appears the driver was not at fault,’ Sanz said, while urging caution as the investigation remains ongoing.
