Pedro Sanchez has congratulated Magyar Peter for his decisive election win in Hungary.
The Spanish prime minister said ‘Europe wins’ following the loss of Viktor Orban.
The far-right figure had ruled the eastern European country for the past 16 years.
His resounding loss is a blow to the White House, after Vice President JD Vance flew to Budapest last week and spoke in support of Orban’s campaign.
Orban accepted defeat hours before polls closed on Sunday, saying the result was ‘painful but unambiguous.’
‘I congratulated the victorious party,’ the rightwing populist told supporters in Budapest.
‘We are going to serve the Hungarian nation and our homeland from opposition as well.’
Magyar’s Tisza party was projected to have won around 138 of the 199 seats in the country’s parliament, giving them a super-majority.
Crucially, it means they look set to be able to reverse some of the changes made by Orban and Fidesz, and potentially unlock EU funds.
Responding to the election result, Spain’s prime minister Sanchez said: ‘Today Europe wins and European values win.
‘Congratulations to all Hungarian citizens for historic elections. Looking forward to working together, Peter Magyar, for a better future for all Europeans.’
