Two masked robbers posing as construction workers stormed a bank on the Costa del Sol in a brazen early-morning raid.
The attempted heist took place at a BBVA branch in La Cala de Mijas on Friday morning, but news of the incident was only released today.
According to police sources, the suspects arrived on a motorbike at around 8.15am, wearing reflective jackets and face coverings to disguise themselves as workmen.
Once inside, they threatened staff with at least one firearm and demanded access to the safe.
However, their plan quickly unravelled when the built-in time delay mechanism prevented the safe from being opened immediately, forcing the robbers to wait.
Fearing police would arrive before they could access the cash, the pair abandoned the attempt and fled the scene.
Emergency services were alerted via 112 Andalucia at the time of the incident, prompting a rapid response from the Guardia Civil and local police.
Paramedics also attended the scene after one person inside the bank suffered an anxiety attack during the ordeal.
By the time officers arrived, the suspects had already escaped on their motorbike in the direction of Marbella.
An investigation is now underway to identify and locate the would-be robbers.
