An ultra-violent Scottish crime clan operating from the Costa del Sol has been dismantled after a massive international police operation spanning four continents.
Officers from the Guardia Civil have taken down the Spanish arm of the notorious Lyons clan – one of Scotland’s most feared criminal organisations – following a three-year investigation codenamed Armorum.
In total, 14 suspects have been arrested across Spain, Scotland, Indonesia and the UAE, with a further 20 individuals under investigation in Spain.
Among those detained is the alleged ringleader, identified as Steven Lyons, who was arrested in the Netherlands after being extradited from Indonesia under a European arrest warrant issued by Spanish authorities.
Investigators say the gang had established a key base on the Costa del Sol, from where its leader coordinated major criminal operations worldwide – including drug trafficking, money laundering and violent crime.
Raids across the Costa del Sol
The final phase of the operation saw 18 properties raided last week, mainly along the Costa del Sol, as well as in Barcelona.
Footage shared by the Guardia Civil shows an Irish tavern being raided in Fuengirola.
A sign on the window reads ‘cash is king’, telling customers that it does not accept cards with cash ‘we retain 100% of its value’ – saying that it stops big banks and credit card companies from getting a cut.
Elsewhere, officers seized large amounts of cash, high-end watches, electronic devices, corporate documents and cryptocurrency wallets.
The leader’s partner was also arrested at Dubai International Airport and is believed to have played an active role in the organisation.
Authorities in Turkey have also frozen high-value assets linked to the group, in a sign of the gang’s extensive international footprint.
The operation was led by a court in Malaga and carried out by elite organised crime units, with support from Europol, Eurojust, the UK’s National Crime Agency, US DEA, Police Scotland and authorities in Turkey and Dubai.
From Glasgow gang to global network
The Lyons clan originated in the streets of Glasgow in the 1990s, initially as a local family-run gang before evolving into a powerful transnational crime network.
Over three decades, investigators say the group built a complex money-laundering empire using shell companies and international financial movements to handle millions of euros generated through drug trafficking.
Their reach extended across Europe, the Middle East and Asia – with Spain, particularly the Costa del Sol, becoming a key operational hub.
The clan’s reputation for violence dates back to a gang war in Scotland in the early 2000s, which later spilled beyond UK borders as rival groups established bases across Europe.
According to investigators, the group’s leader relocated to Spain in 2006 following a deadly feud in Glasgow, later moving to Dubai while continuing to direct operations internationally.
He is also believed to have forged alliances with other major crime syndicates, including the Kinahan cartel.
The Costa del Sol has long been a magnet for international organised crime, offering both logistical advantages and a gateway to Europe.
That reality was underscored again last year when the brother of the Lyons clan leader was shot dead alongside an associate in a Fuengirola beach bar in a suspected gangland hit.
