A major security operation remains in place in the Granada town of Montefrio following an axe attack that left three people injured and led to the arrest of a migrant farm worker.
Officers from the Guardia Civil have reinforced their presence in the town in a bid to maintain calm, prevent further incidents and guarantee public safety.
It comes after a protest on Monday night saw hundreds of locals gather in the main square to demand a ‘peaceful coexistence’ between different nationalities, and one ‘without violence’.
At one point, some were heard chanting ‘no es racismo’ (it’s not racism), in relation to the demonstration’s demands.
The tensions were high, however, with multiple scuffles reported, including one outside a fruit shop owned by a Moroccan family.
One man, 36, was arrested for resisting and disobeying police instructions.
The investigation into the axe attack remains open, with authorities confirming that no definitive motive has been established.
In response to the escalating tensions in the town, police have significantly increased their presence across Montefrio.
Alongside local officers already deployed, reinforcements from the Guardia Civil’s specialist Grupo de Reserva y Seguridad (GRS), based in Sevilla, have been brought in.
The move is aimed at deterring any further unrest and ensuring a rapid response to any potential acts of violence or hostility.
Authorities have stressed that protecting residents and maintaining peaceful coexistence is now the ‘absolute priority’.
