Michael Fassbender will film part of an international film on the Costa del Sol, it has been revealed.
Just days after news that Jason Statham’s latest film wrapped with a scene set in Ronda, another major production is heading to southern Spain.
Fassbender will be joined by Domhnall Gleeson and Ruth Negga for their adaptation of Night Boat To Tangier, a novel by Kevin Barry.
Filming is expected to begin at the end of summer, according to industry outlet Screen Daily.
Crime story set between Malaga and Tangier
The story follows two small-time Irish criminals – one one-eyed, the other limping – hiding out in a Spanish port city, widely understood to be Malaga, as they wait for a ferry to Tangier.
Over the course of a long, tense night, the pair revisit their past crimes, plot future ones and encounter a cast of eccentric local characters.
The novel has been described as a gritty mix of noir and psychological drama, and has been adapted for the screen by Barry himself.
Producers have already scouted locations across Malaga, reportedly drawn by what they describe as the perfect blend of ‘sunshine and seediness’ needed for the film’s tone.
The project is being produced by Andrew Eaton, a major figure in British cinema and co-founder of Revolution Films, alongside Fassbender, who is also on board as a producer.
Eaton has described the script as ‘one of the best’ he has worked on, adding that the role offers Fassbender a chance to return to peak form.
Another boost for Costa del Sol film industry
The production adds to a growing list of international shoots choosing the Costa del Sol as a backdrop, thanks to its climate, infrastructure and visual variety.
