Andalucia is leading the way when it comes to happiness after dominating a new nationwide ranking of where life feels best.
A major study looking at more than 8,000 towns and cities across Spain has crowned Malaga as the happiest place to live in the country, with Andalucia firmly stamping its mark on the list.
The research, carried out by Sonneil Homes for the Spain Happy Index 2026, looked at everything from sunshine and temperatures to access to hospitals, schools and transport.
The result is a score out of 100 that paints a picture of where people really feel good about life.
And topping the table is Malaga, scoring an impressive 91.36 points. With around 310 days of sunshine a year, mild temperatures averaging 18 degrees and a strong network of services, it’s no surprise locals say they’re thriving.
Hot on its heels is Almeria with 90.88 points, matching Malaga’s sunshine levels but with even fewer rainy days. Its stable climate, coastal setting and solid infrastructure have helped push it near the top.
Ibiza takes third place with 90.86 points, while Alicante sits just behind in fourth with 89.99, both benefiting from warm weather, seaside living and strong transport links.

But it’s the wider picture that really tells the story. The Mediterranean lifestyle is clearly key, with coastal cities dominating the rankings thanks to their climate, outdoor lifestyle and access to services.
More Andalucian favourites also make a strong showing. Cadiz scores 88.12, while Sevilla and Granada also rank highly, reinforcing the region’s reputation as one of Spain’s best places to live well.
The eight happiest places in Andalucia according to the Happy Index 2026 are:
- Malaga: 91.36
- Almeria: 90.88
- Roquetas de Mar: 89.61
- Torremolinos: 89.25
- Fuengirola: 88.66
- Cadiz: 88.12
- Sevilla: 84.35
- Granada: 83.15
Even Spain’s biggest cities hold their own. Barcelona reaches 86.90 points, Valencia 85.97, and Madrid lands 83.13, helped by its extensive healthcare, education and transport systems despite being inland.
Beyond the big names, smaller coastal towns are quietly climbing the happiness charts.
Places like Roquetas de Mar and Costa del Sol hotspots including Torremolinos and Fuengirola all score highly, offering year-round sunshine, strong local services and a laid-back lifestyle.
