Reversing is something most drivers do without thinking, whether it’s parking or squeezing into a tight space.
But in Spain, using reverse gear incorrectly could land you with a fine of up to €200 and even cost you points on your licence.
Under Spain’s traffic rules, driving in reverse is strictly limited.
It’s only permitted in specific situations, such as parking, leaving a parking space or when forward movement or turning isn’t possible
Even then, it must be done over the shortest distance necessary.
Strict limits drivers often ignore
There are clear boundaries many drivers don’t realise:
- You cannot reverse more than 15 metres
- You must not reverse into intersections or crossings
- It is completely forbidden on motorways and dual carriageways
Breaking these rules can turn a simple manoeuvre into a serious offence.
Fines and penalties
In most cases, improper reversing will result in a €200 fine and the loss of four points from your licence.
Less serious cases may carry a €100 fine, while more dangerous situations – such as reversing in the wrong direction – can be considered very serious offences, with penalties of up to €500.
How to do it legally
The law is clear on how reversing should be carried out.
Drivers must move slowly, signal properly and ensure it is safe before manoeuvring.
In some cases, this may even mean getting out of the car to check visibility or asking someone else to guide you.
