Pedro Sanchez has lashed out at the global situation triggered by the Iran war, admitting he is ‘very angry’ as his government is forced to commit billions to protect the economy.
The Spanish PM made the comments on Friday following an emergency Cabinet meeting, where a €5 billion support package was approved to counter the economic fallout of the conflict sparked by the US and Israel.
Speaking to reporters, Sanchez did not hide his frustration with the two countries, warning that decisions taken by ‘certain governments’ are dragging the world into a dangerous situation.
‘I am very, very angry about what is happening in the world and the situation we are being dragged into by certain decisions and certain governments,’ he said.
The Spanish leader also took aim at politicians who have failed to clearly condemn the war, accusing some of ‘sitting on the fence’ instead of speaking out.
He stressed the real-world consequences for ordinary people in Spain, pointing out that the crisis will come at a direct cost to taxpayers.
‘People need to understand that when we talk about wars, there are consequences,’ Sanchez said.
‘Those €5 billion are what all Spaniards will now have to contribute, through their taxes, to protect businesses and the most vulnerable.’
The remarks come as Spain rolls out emergency measures to cushion the blow of rising fuel and energy prices.
