Rain is set to return to Andalucia this week as a new Atlantic storm system forms off the coast of Portugal, bringing wet and unsettled weather to much of the region.
Forecasters say the heaviest rainfall is expected in the western provinces, particularly Cadiz, Huelva and Sevilla, starting from Wednesday.
However, meteorologists have confirmed that Storm Samuel, which is currently battering parts of the Mediterranean, will not affect Andalucia.
According to Juan de Dios, the regional delegate for Spain’s state weather agency Aemet, the rain will arrive in waves throughout the week rather than as a single prolonged storm.
The wettest days are expected to be Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
Clouds building from Tuesday
At the start of the week, the storm system will remain mostly stationary and will have little effect on the region during Monday and Tuesday.
But by the end of Tuesday, cloud cover is expected to increase and light rain could begin to move into western Andalucia. Cadiz, Huelva and Sevilla are likely to see the first showers, with lighter rainfall also possible in Malaga and Cordoba.
Thursday is expected to bring more mixed conditions with intervals of cloud and some clearer spells.
Rain is then forecast to return on Friday, with showers expected across much of Andalucia before another unsettled spell arrives over the weekend.
Meteorologists say Sunday currently looks set to be the wettest day of the weekend, while Saturday should remain mostly cloudy but with a lower chance of rainfall.
Temperatures rising and falling
Daytime temperatures will fluctuate throughout the week, rising and falling by two or three degrees from one day to the next.
Temperatures are expected to climb slightly on Tuesday – with highs of 24C expected in Sevilla – before dropping on Wednesday, rising again on Thursday and then falling more sharply on Friday by as much as six or seven degrees.
By the weekend, temperatures should gradually begin to recover again.
Strong winds near the Strait
Wind is not expected to be a major factor across most of Andalucia this week.
The main exception will be the Strait of Gibraltar area in Cadiz province, where Aemet has issued a yellow weather warning for strong winds on Tuesday.
Although winds are expected to ease slightly on Wednesday, forecasters say strong or very strong easterly winds could return to the area on Thursday and Friday.
