The Maritimo Hospital in Torremolinos is set for a €2.4million upgrade, it has emerged.
The contract for the works on Pavilion 1 of the site has been put out to tender by the Junta de Andalucia.
The plans detail the creation of a new emergency department in a bid to improve healthcare in the 75,000-strong municipality – which balloons during the summer.
The announcement was made by regional minister Antonio Sanz, during the inauguration of the new provincial headquarters of the Faisem foundation in Malaga.
Sanz said the project reflects the Junta’s commitment to strengthening primary healthcare and improving access to medical services along the Costa del Sol.
The plan includes a new emergency department with eight medical consultation rooms and a total built area of 765 square metres, equipped with updated medical resources.
The layout will respect the original structure of the building, which is designed in the shape of a Latin cross. The main wing will house the consultation rooms and the area reserved for healthcare staff.
The new facilities will include an entrance hall, reception and waiting area, as well as an emergency room, an observation area, two treatment rooms and eight medical consulting rooms.

A dedicated space for staff will also be created, including three bedrooms, bathrooms and a rest area to help improve working conditions for healthcare professionals and support the organisation of the service.
The Junta says the project forms part of a broader strategy to modernise and strengthen the region’s healthcare system.
Sanz also highlighted other recent investments in Malaga province, including the laying of the foundation stone for the new Hospital Virgen de la Esperanza and the expansion of the Hospital Costa del Sol, both aimed at reinforcing the region’s healthcare network.
