Plans for a new five-star luxury hotel on the Almeria coast have taken a major step forward after Mojacar town hall granted the building licence for the project.
The hotel will form part of the Macenas Mediterranean Resort and is expected to open in 2028 under Hyatt’s ‘Destination by Hyatt’ brand.
The development is being promoted by the Cosentino family’s investment office and will involve an cash injection of more than €40 million.
Once completed, the hotel will feature 143 rooms and aims to become a flagship destination for luxury tourism on Spain’s Mediterranean coast.
Developers say the wider resort project is designed to transform the Macenas area into a high-end destination combining residential, hotel and leisure facilities.
The concept focuses on what the promoters describe as ‘discreet luxury’, targeting travellers seeking nature, wellness, exclusivity and outdoor experiences.
Supporters of the project also hope the hotel will help reduce the seasonal nature of tourism in the area by attracting visitors throughout the year.
The development is also expected to create new jobs in the region once construction and operations are underway.
Hotel asset management firm GMA Corporate will play a key role in the project, helping oversee the development and future management of the property.
The hotel itself has been designed by architecture studio GCA Architects and will follow a Mediterranean-style concept with a focus on sustainability.

Developers say the building will be integrated into the natural landscape and local topography in order to minimise visual impact and protect the surrounding environment.
The rooms will be designed to maximise privacy, comfort and views of the natural surroundings.
Sustainability measures will include energy efficiency systems, reduced emissions, responsible water management and the use of environmentally friendly materials.
The developers aim for the hotel to achieve BREEAM certification, one of the world’s leading standards for sustainable construction.
Guests will also have access to a range of premium services including fine dining, wellness areas, outdoor activities and cultural experiences.
These facilities will complement those already available at the Macenas Club Social, which currently includes restaurants, a pool area, sports facilities, shops, a supermarket and a beauty centre.
The project is part of a wider transformation of the Macenas resort area.
Renovation work is already underway on the resort’s 18-hole golf course, which sits between the Sierra Cabrera mountains and the Mediterranean Sea.
The course, designed by Stirling & Martin, will incorporate sustainable irrigation systems using recycled water from the resort.
Plans also include a new clubhouse with a golf academy, restaurant, pro shop and practice facilities.
Construction is also continuing on a new wastewater treatment plant for the complex, designed to improve water recycling and sustainability across the resort.
Alongside the hotel development, the project will also expand the resort’s residential offering with luxury villas and new housing developments planned for the area.
