Donald Trump has launched a fresh attack on Spain, calling the country a ‘loser’ and accusing it of being ‘very hostile to NATO.’
Speaking in a phone interview with the New York Post on Thursday, the US president criticised what he described as unreliable allies while discussing the growing tensions surrounding Iran.
‘We have a lot of winners, but Spain is a loser, and the United Kingdom has been very disappointing,’ Trump said.
‘They don’t pay their – they’re the only one that voted against the 5% payment, and they’re very hostile to everyone,’ he said, referring to NATO members’ commitment to contribute 5% of their GDP to defence.
‘Not a team player, and we’re not going to be a team player with Spain either.’
The remarks mark the latest escalation in the diplomatic row between Washington and Madrid after Spain refused to allow the US to use its military bases at Rota and Moron for operations linked to Iran.
Trump also turned his criticism towards the UK, saying Prime Minister Keir Starmer should support the American campaign without hesitation.
According to Trump, Britain should back the operation against Iran ‘without questioning it.’
