A man has been found dead inside his cell at Marbella’s Local Police headquarters.
Officers made the discovery on Wednesday when they went to transfer the detainee to the Policia Nacional station.
When they opened the cell, they realised the man was not responding and appeared to be dead.
Earlier, officers guarding the detainee had already called for medical assistance after he began showing signs of severe agitation.
Paramedics attended the station and treated the man before he remained in the holding cells.
Later, when officers returned to move him, they found him unresponsive. Emergency services were called again but could only confirm his death.
Investigators will now examine whether the case could be linked to ‘excited delirium’, a condition sometimes associated with sudden and unexpected deaths in people experiencing extreme physical and mental agitation.
Following the activation of judicial protocol, the body was transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine, where a full autopsy is expected to be carried out on Thursday to determine the exact cause of death.
A similar case occurred in Torremolinos in 2024, when a 30-year-old Irish man died while being held in police custody.
He had been arrested on suspicion of domestic violence and was being held in cells before appearing in court when officers found him dead.
Police said at the time he had also required medical attention after showing signs of agitation before being placed in custody.
