King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez have held an emergency meeting at Zarzuela Palace as tensions soar following US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
The private talks on Tuesday evening focused on the rapidly worsening international situation and the potential political and economic consequences of the escalating conflict.
Sources from the Spanish government confirmed the head of state and the prime minister discussed how the crisis could affect Spain and the wider global economy.
The military offensive by the US and Israel was justified by Washington as an attempt to curb Iran’s strategic capabilities and regional influence.
But the attacks have sparked fresh threats across the Middle East, raising fears of a wider war.
Iran has warned of retaliation and has begun mobilising allies in the region, while Israel insists its actions are a form of preventive defence against what it describes as an existential threat.
Against that backdrop, the meeting between the King and Sanchez focused on the possible implications for Spain.
These include the safety of Spanish troops deployed on international missions as well as the economic and energy impact if the conflict spreads further.
When the meeting took place, US President Donald Trump had not yet publicly threatened Spain with trade retaliation over its position on the crisis.

Those threats emerged later, adding a new layer of tension between Washington and Madrid.
Regular meetings between the King and the prime minister are part of the normal functioning of the Spanish state, although the exact schedule is not made public.
However, the timing and length of Tuesday’s meeting underline the seriousness of the current diplomatic situation.
