A 42-year-old British woman has been killed in front of her family in a horror crash in Murcia.
The mother died on Saturday after the van she was travelling in collided with a lorry on the A-7 motorway in Totana, according to Spain’s Guardia Civil traffic division.
The van reportedly struck the rear of an articulated lorry at around 1.45pm.
Spain’s 112 emergency service described the scene as ‘extremely serious’, stating that one person had been thrown from a vehicle during the collision and was found lying on the roadway.
Emergency services, including Guardia Civil traffic officers, firefighters from the Lorca station and multiple ambulances, were dispatched to the scene.
Fire crews were placed on standby in case anyone needed to be freed from the wreckage.
The British family suffered the most severe consequences. The 42-year-old woman died at the scene. An 18-year-old man sustained very serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital.
A 40-year-old man and a seven-year-old girl also suffered injuries, although they were described as less serious.
The two drivers travelling in the cab of the lorry were treated for minor injuries.
The accident caused traffic delays of around one and a half kilometres, with the right-hand lane temporarily closed.
While a full investigation is ongoing, early indications suggest that distraction may have been a factor in the fatal collision.
